Factory Mounted Smoke Detectors

Smoke control is a proven technology that saves lives.  Smoke or combination fire/smoke dampers and the devices that control them, such as smoke detectors, are important components of a smoke control system. It is important to understand that smoke dampers do not inherently detect the presence of smoke.  It is a corresponding smoke detector that normally causes the damper to close and thus "stop" smoke from leaking through the damper. UL555S, the UL Smoke Damper Test Standard, recognizes three different leakage classes.  Smoke or combination fire/smoke are tested and rated according to one of the following classes: Class 1 leakage is 4 cfm/sqft at 1” w.g. or less Class 2 leakage is a maximum of 10 cfm/sqft at 1” w.g. Class 3 leakage is a maximum of 40 cfm/sqft at 1” w.g. The volume of air leaking through a closed damper represents smoke "leaking" through the damper during a fire.  In life safety situations it makes good engineering sense to specify and install minimum Class 2 smoke or combination fi ...

A Fire Damper Paradigm Shift

Did you know fire and combination fire/smoke dampers could be installed with RUSKIN FAST mounting angle on ONLY one side of the wall? YES, YOU HEARD IT CORRECTLY!!!  Ruskin - Made it Happen!!Traditional Ruskin fire and combination fire/smoke dampers may be installed in metal stud, wood stud and concrete wall applications with mounting angles installed on only one side of the wall.  The benefits of the FAST one-side angle paradigm shift are:UL tested and approved instructions$25-$50 installation savings per damperGreat for retrofit applications with limited accessMaximum size of 90"w x 49"h or 49"w x 90"hMetal stud, wood stud and concrete wall applicationsAbility to install prior to gypsum being installedThe new Ruskin FAST angle incorporates a flat angle design so the damper and mounting angle can be installed prior to installing the gypsum wallboard.  Wow, what labor savings for the installing contractor!!!!Ruskin, also provides the angle one-side option as an integral part of the damper.  This eliminates wa ...

Ruskin Quick-Detect, Heat-Activated Controlled Closure Devices: What Do They Do?

Ruskin standard Fire/Smoke dampers utilize quick detect, heat activated, controlled closure devices to make the damper close in the event of fire. Normal fusible rods and links, when released, allow instantaneous closure of the damper which can result in damage to the connecting duct work. However, Ruskin's use of controlled closure prevents that damage from occurring.Ruskin fire safety products feature a variety of controlled closure options, in order to best meet the requirements of your application. For detailed descriptions of the standard controlled closure options consult the Fire/Smoke Damper Operation Options data sheet. For detailed information on Ruskin release devices, please consult our Combination Fire/Smoke Damper Release Devices engineering report. In addition, for an in-depth look at how controlled closure eliminates HVAC duct system damage, consult our Controlled Closure Engineering report.  This report is based on actual tests performed in our AMCA registered laboratory.
