Critical IBC Code Changes Require IAQ Control and Low-Leak Dampers

Two critical code changes have been recently implemented that affect control damper requirements and outside air management. The first (Section 403 of the International Mechanical Code) requires that constant ventilation requirements be maintained for all HVAC systems – including VAV systems. The second (International Energy Conservation Code, IECC) requires that outside air dampers have a leakage rating of 3 cfm/ft2 or less – thus maintaining energy savings in a zone during unoccupied hours.

New Code Requirements Challenge Manufacturers

Ruskin Economizer Solution meets demanding leakage and air ventilation specifications. (KANSAS CITY, Mo.) – New, more stringent leakage and ventilation air requirements issued by ASHRAE, AMCA, the International Mechanical Code (IMC) and the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), has HVAC manufacturers scrambling to bring their products up to specs.  That is, all but one -- Ruskin Dampers and Louvers. Ruskin's new Economizer Solution was developed with the latest code requirements in mind.  And, includes many standard features for which other manufacturers charge a premium or simply cannot offer. Combined, the modified codes now demand motorized outside air dampers that provide ultra-low leakage rates of 3 cfm per sq. ft. at 1-inch water gauge.  This includes all outside dampers -- regardless of size or application.  Some of the applications covered are stairways, elevator shaft vents, mechanical rooms, rooftop air handling units, custom air handling units and other areas ...

Ruskin Enters Economizer Business

Automated dampers help save time and money (KANSAS CITY, Mo.) – With the introduction of their complete line of automated Economizer dampers and power exhaust units for rooftop air handlers, Ruskin the HVAC industry's leading provider of dampers and louvers, has entered the Economizer business.  Ruskin's dampers range from 3-25 ton and are suitable for both horizontal and vertical applications. Featuring Ruskin's exclusive one-piece galvanized airfoil blade and stainless steel jamb, the Economizers provide low-leakage performance as described in ASHRAE Standard 90.1.  Each unit also features Ruskin's “SUREFLOW” sensing tubes and blade position indicator to help determine minimum air flow.  This also helps assist in mixed air temperature verses blade position field adjustments. Determining accurate minimum air flow using the SUREFLOW system is easy.  Using the current percent of required make-up air and fan system CFM, take note of the blade position from the indicator ...
