Automated dampers help save time and money
(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) – With the introduction of their complete line of automated Economizer dampers and power exhaust units for rooftop air handlers, Ruskin the HVAC industry's leading provider of dampers and louvers, has entered the Economizer business. Ruskin's dampers range from 3-25 ton and are suitable for both horizontal and vertical applications.
Featuring Ruskin's exclusive one-piece galvanized airfoil blade and stainless steel jamb, the Economizers provide low-leakage performance as described in ASHRAE Standard 90.1. Each unit also features Ruskin's “SUREFLOW” sensing tubes and blade position indicator to help determine minimum air flow. This also helps assist in mixed air temperature verses blade position field adjustments.
Determining accurate minimum air flow using the SUREFLOW system is easy. Using the current percent of required make-up air and fan system CFM, take note of the blade position from the indicator ...

ALL NEW UL555 (Fire Damper) and UL555S (Smoke Damper) Test Standards begin JULY 1, 2002! What do they mean to you?

Smoke control is a proven technology that saves lives. Smoke or combination fire/smoke dampers and the devices that control them, such as smoke detectors, are important components of a smoke control system.
It is important to understand that smoke dampers do not inherently detect the presence of smoke. It is a corresponding smoke detector that normally causes the damper to close and thus "stop" smoke from leaking through the damper.
UL555S, the UL Smoke Damper Test Standard, recognizes three different leakage classes. Smoke or combination fire/smoke are tested and rated according to one of the following classes:
Class 1 leakage is 4 cfm/sqft at 1” w.g. or less
Class 2 leakage is a maximum of 10 cfm/sqft at 1” w.g.
Class 3 leakage is a maximum of 40 cfm/sqft at 1” w.g.
The volume of air leaking through a closed damper represents smoke "leaking" through the damper during a fire. In life safety situations it makes good engineering sense to specify and install minimum Class 2 smoke or combination fi ...
